Abstract

This article critically examines and contrasts the communication responses of China and the United States to the unprecedented COVID-19 pandemic that emerged in Wuhan, China, at the beginning of 2020. By focusing on mass communication and semiotics, we delve into how these two nations have grappled with the crisis. In particular, we explore the communication strategies employed by major social media platforms in each country during the pandemic. Additionally, we investigate public perceptions and reactions toward China based on U.S. media coverage. This comparative analysis sheds light on the pivotal role of communication in shaping global understanding and responses to public health emergencies, emphasizing the need for nuanced and context-aware approaches.
